THE RETURN OF THE BLACK SWAMP...AND OTHER WAYS I'VE BEEN ATTEMPTING TO RETAIN MY SANITY DURING THIS WILD RIDE

Being Emo on the swing

Hello, all!

It's been a while, I know, but it's been really busy up here lately and this blog isn't at the top of my list of things to do ;P

So!  I have clients now!  It felt like it took forever for all of the students to find out what we were getting ourselves into...but I think three weeks ago now (WOW time flies) we got our clinic assignments. I have six kids! SIX! It was a big shocker at first, but I'm starting to take it in stride. Things are really different working with that many, compared to the other girls who have one or two at the maximum, but I feel like I'm getting a really great experience. I'm learning quite a bit and having a great time, generally, and that's all I can ask for!

Typical
Two weekends ago, my boyfriend Andy came up to BG for the Black Swamp Arts Festival, one of my favorite weekends of the year. Basically four or five blocks of Main st. shuts down to automobile traffic, and tons of art vendors set up tents to display and sell their artwork! I am a bit of a closet artist nowadays, so I really love getting out and seeing what people are creating while I'm spending all of my time (or at least what feels like all of my time) working :)  Anyway, we had a great time! We had to stop by the BEST music store around, Finders, where (as usual) Andy found 5 record albums that he wanted. I swear, the boy comes up here primarily to see me, but he absolutely LOVES that store, and would probably come up to visit it even if I weren't here
I learned that for some unknown reason, playing on playgrounds with your boyfriend or girlfriend is ridiculously fun. We had way too much fun one of the days that weekend, we even came up with an obstacle course! Silly us.

I also discovered that my oven is possessed by a demon. I swear, when I bake things, it only takes half the time at around 50-100 degrees cooler than packaging designates. It's taken many inedible, charred pizzas for me to really understand the demon, but now I think I have a handle on him.

I've also discovered that my smoke alarms don't really approve of my baking anything. Whenever I bake or open the oven, they go off. Usually that causes me to sprint through my tiny apartment and rip them down, only to sprint back in order to take the nearly-burnt-but-generally-still-quite-tasty thing out of my oven to eat. It gets irritating really quickly. But oh well.

Last weekend, my good friend Steph came and visited me! After four years of never coming up to BG, she finally made the trip! We went to see "the Help" (don't even get me started on how amazing that movie is...JUST GO SEE IT!) and then spent the day at the Toledo Zoo! It was great...we also got some great hooping pictures! Here are a few of the memorable ones...

As you can tell, hooping with LEDs is super fun and turns out really sweet at night when you take longer exposure pics :)

Anyway, we had a great time. We dyed our hair and drank cheap wine, and ended up going back to that playground so that Steph could try her hand at the obstacle course! Video is in the making and will be uploaded to my Youtube sometime soon. We had a blast!

The zoo was great. I expected something bigger, because that's what I'm used to...the Columbus zoo is huge. But the animals were so cool! There was a baby elephant and a baby giraffe! And there were horny turtles and attempted giraffe rape, so overall the day didn't disappoint.

Since then, I've been mostly working on schoolwork that I couldn't do while the friends were visiting me. It's no problem though, I've been able to stay on top of just about everything, thank goodness.

Well, I ought to make some dinner so I can get back to work...talk to you later!

TWO WEEKS DOWN!

It's Friday!  I've survived two full weeks of grad school! What a glorious thing....It seemed like it passed in a second. What's scary is that I'm not half as busy as I'm going to be in a week, and this summer definitely confirmed a relationship I have observed a few times before...increasing how busy you are makes time pass exponentially faster. I still can't believe that in two years, I'll be a practicing SLP! How amazing and crazy and SOON THAT IS!!

So you're going to have to get used to me updating every week or so, because I have no good reason to be on here more often than that when I have so much else to get done :)

Today has been great...Over the past few minutes, I've stumbled upon a bunch of awesome So You Think You Can Dance clips that really moved me years and years ago when they originally aired. I haven't watched the show consistently in at least two years, which is sad. I need to get back on that...maybe this summer? Great things, mostly contemporary dances...Allison and Ivan, Travis and Heidi, Twitch and Kherington, Chelsie and Mark...and many more. So good.

Yesterday I listened to an album for the first time...Hurry Up, We're Dreaming by M83. IT WAS AMAZING. If anyone out there likes Passion Pit or like styles, you might absolutely love this.

I feel like listening to Washed Out next...Anything to remind me of boyfriend  :)

Next weekend is the Black Swamp Arts Festival in BG! If you know what's good for you and you live in the area, you should be there! It's great! My boyfriend is coming up to visit that weekend...I've hounded him enough about it for him to actually make the trip  ;)

I'm watching Rent right now. I always feel skeptical watching it...even though I've seen it many times (and had both the Broadway and movie soundtracks since high school), I keep falling into the thought that it's overrated. But every time I get the half-urge to watch it and actually have the motivation to put it in, I remember why I loved it so much in the first place. Yes, it's like that South Park episode, everyone's all like "we're all dying of AIDS." But there's so much more than that. The music is absolutely to die for. And though some characters are absolutely irritating in every way (I've always hated Maureen's numbers, other than "Take Me or Leave Me," of course), the whole show has such a more accessible feel than most other musicals. It's so sad that the creator died before he could see it flourish as a show...

Okay. I totally didn't want this to turn into a rant about Rent. Haha.

But I have very little else to talk about other than being so busy, so I'm just going to stop talking now :)

More later!!

A NEW ADVENTURE BEGINS

I've been pretty busy recently so updating this blog has been on the back burner. However, here are some fun videos and things I've taken with friends while summer was still going strong...

My Dog gets Bathed....Soooooo Cute
Fun Times at the Lakehouse Party 2011
Hoop Practice Outside with the Family
Me and My Friends being Ridiculous...Typical

On a more recent note...SUMMER HAS OFFICIALLY ENDED!

Last week was Graduate Student Orientation week. It was pretty informative, but also old news in terms of a lot of the information I was given. I did acquire a few cool magnets...for the counseling center. Haha. Hopefully I won't need those...

Then, starting on last Thursday, I ventured home to help my boyfriend move into his new apartment. We didn't think we'd even be able to move in this weekend, but it worked out in the end! It was a bit dramatic at times...like when the building had his parents' car towed while we were moving in...but it was really fun overall.

That reminds me. EVERYONE has to try the BIG BANG BAR in Columbus' Arena District. It's the most awesome place in the world! I went there twice last weekend with friends and with Boyfriend's parents, and it was just fabulous both times. If anyone's interested in live music at bars and interactive and comedic dueling pianists...well...THIS is the bar for you!!!

And now for the scary news...aaah!

Today is my first day of grad school at Bowling Green State University! It's been a fairly uneventful one...I ran 3.7 miles this morning, cooked lunch, organized my backpack for my class tonight, and surfed the internet for a while. I'm so excited to be a research assistant for some of the coolest professors in my major! I'm also excited to be doing research because it is saving me from teaching the required undergrad speech class, which the majority of the girls on assistantship in my major are doing. Some of them had to start teaching a class they were only just prepared for three days ago THIS MORNING AT 8 AM. Basically, I'm super happy I'm not in their situation right now! I hope that they get through everything without pulling their hair out, it really sounds like it'll be a challenge! They have to deal with every kind of student at college, from the Type-A overachievers (like all of us who made it to grad school) to the kids whose parents made them come to college and don't really care about academics at all. Craziness.

Well, I oughta pack my dinner and get to campus so I can take advantage of FREEEEEEE PRINTINGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm super excited about this free printing. It's amazing. Any money I can save on my own printer ink or printing on campus in general is okay by me!

Catch you later!

A EULOGY

I just came to the realization that my two favorite television comedies have come to equally tragic, yet entirely opposite, ends.  One, though incredibly witty and ingenious, was underrated and canceled before its time. The other, also incredibly witty and ingenious at its inception, has been so well loved that it has continued for years, finally reaching the point where its spark, its fresh twist on comedy, has faded. The show of which I speak is actually still on the air, but I am not alone when I say that it's glory days are long gone. I'd like to commemorate these shows with a short eulogy. However, since the last time I wrote a eulogy was in the 8th grade for a goldfish of mine who committed suicide (RIP Snowy), I sought the internet for some guidance on formatting and topics to mention. After some searching, the internet did provide me with a formatting tool to use for these eulogies, so here we go...

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

An aspiring actor once said “I just blue myself”.

Lindsay, are you forgetting that I was a professional twice over - an analyst and a therapist. The world's first analrapist.
If you recognized that quote, then the TV comedy "Arrested Development" has touched your life. It was the most simultaneously horrifying and hilarious television show I've ever seen. Though, judging from the show's cancellation years ago, It seems that many of you may not have agreed in time to save it from its untimely demise.

Illusion, Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money...
LIFE
Arrested Development was first aired on November 2nd, 2003 on the FOX network. It was the brainchild of Mitchell Hurwitz and James Valley, with music composed by the lovely David Schwartz. The show ran for a total of 3 seasons (22 episodes, 18 episodes, and a final 13 episodes), and was canceled in 2006.

I'm half machine, I'm a monster!!!

CAST and STORYLINE

Jason Bateman starred as young businessman Michael Bluth, son of George Bluth Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor), executive of the Bluth company. When George Bluth Sr.'s shifty accounting practices are discovered by authorities, the family's extensive assets (or, in reality, the company's assets) are frozen. Michael becomes determined to hold his family together and rebuild the company which his father destroyed. Everyone in the family begins to panic at the loss of access to company money, causing obnoxious amounts of dysfunction amongst the Bluth's. Michael and his awkward son, George Michael (Michael Cera), must continue to live in the attic of the Bluth model home, rather than venture for a place of their own. George Bluth Sr. is sent to prison, and his neurotic wife is left to live at the family penthouse with her son Buster (Tony Hale), whose personality has been reduced to that of a bumbling child thanks to his mother's debilitating grasp upon every aspect of his life. Michael's second brother, the self-proclaimed magician "Gob" (Will Arnett), shifts between living on the family yacht and Michael's pseudo-home. Micheal's materialistic and vain twin sister, Lindsay (Portia de Rossi), finally returns from her longtime absence, towing her pathetically delusional husband, Tobias (David Cross), and her rebellious daughter, Maeby (Alia Shawkat). Michael's frustration at the family's lack of motivation and obliviousness to their financial situation cause him to constantly question, as he attempts to turn his siblings into productive members of society, whether the family and the company are worth saving.

That's all I've ever wanted from you, Daddy- for you to spend money on me.
An UNFORTUNATE and UNTIMELY DEATH

Okay, so I don't have access to actual statistics for these things, so most of this section is ripped off of the Wikipedia page.

The show, while critically acclaimed, did not gain a sizable audience. U.S. ratings in the second season averaged about six million viewers, while the third season averaged about four million viewers. It can be speculated that much of the issue of audience size (0r lack thereof) was due to both cutbacks on the part of FOX and to poorly scheduled air times. Fox announced that it would halt the production of the second season at eighteen episodes—four episodes short of the planned season, in order to make time for Family Guy. The show's writers parody this in the episode "Sword of Destiny", which aired in March 2005. In the beginning of the episode, Michael complains that the Bluth Company's order to design and build 22 homes has been cut down to 18 homes. Then, in the third season, Fox positioned the show at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT and 7:00 p.m. CT/MT, directly opposite Monday Night Football in the Mountain and Pacific time zones. Ratings were (not surprisingly) even worse than previous seasons. On November 9, 2005, Fox announced that the show would not be airing in November sweeps, and that they had cut the episode order for the third season from 22 to 13. Fox ended up showing the final four episodes in a two-hour timeslot—directly opposite the opening ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics. The finale received only 3.3 million viewers.

The media has him out to be some sort of mastermind, which believe me he's not. The man can barely work our shredder.
AWARDS
Since the show's inception, Arrested Development was critically acclaimed. In 2004, Michael Hurwitz won an Emmy in the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series category for the pilot episode. Then, in 2005, Jason Bateman won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy, and Michael Hurwitz and James Valley won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, for the episode "The Righteous Brothers." Arrested Development also won recognition from less well-known award distributors, including the American Cinema Editors, the Casting Society of America, Satellite, TV-Land, the Television Critics Association, and the Writers Guild of America. The show was nominated for countless awards, not only for quality of writing and acting, but also for filming and editing.

It's bring-your-daughter-to-work-day. And unless you've got a daughter I don't know about, I'm your girl.

MOMENTS
I am one of those people who did not come to love the series until after its passing. I know your pain. However, I choose to rejoice in those moments that make the show so much fun to relive again and again...
  • Tobias and his cutoffs...
  • THERE'S ALWAYS MONEY IN THE BANANA STAND!!!
  • Barry Zuckerkorn...being Barry Zuckerkorn
  • Mr. Manager?
  • I've made a huge mistake.
  • Gene Parmesan!!!
  • Annyong.
  • Ann?
  • Chicken calls.  COOKOH COOKOH ... CHAWCHEECHAWCHEECHAW ... ACOODLEDOODLEDOO ... and so forth.
  • Justice is blind.
  • Mi Hermano?
  • STEVE HOLT!
  • Cornballer!
  • No Touching!
  • Bob Loblaw.
  • Say what you want about America, thirteen bucks still gets you a hell of a lot of mice!

Arrested Development, we love you.

Even though this show has already reached its end, there is hope for the future. Let there be an Arrested Development movie!!! I do not get out much. If you see that there are plans for the movie to actually be executed, please tell me! It would make my day.

This is what I call beauty.

...and now for part two...

THE OFFICE

An infamous young prankster once said: "Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica."
We didn't play many video games in Scranton. Instead we'd do stuff like.. uh, Pam and I would sometimes hum the same high pitched note and try to get Dwight to make an appointment with an ear doctor. And, uh, Pam called it... Pretendinitis.
I know what you are thinking, and yes, I did in fact steal the name for my blog from Jim Halpert, a character on the NBC comedy the Office. This show has brought me years and years of entertainment, and I am better for it. Much of the population has come to appreciate the parody, and its popularity has continued to drive the show forward. Now, it can be confidently said that the show is likely reaching its conclusion after the 8th season, the series seems to be ending with a fizzle, and not the bang I had anticipated and hoped for. Granted, the last episodes of the most recent series attempted to rekindle the old spark with witty Jim-Dwight banter and general office awkwardness, I don't feel that continuing on this current path is going to be enough to give it a clever ending.

It's simply beyond words. It's incalculacable.
LIFE
The Office as we know it was created and first aired in 2005, and is based off of the BBC hit of the same title. The series just completed its seventh season, and is scheduled for another, despite the departure of its star.

Okay, just so I understand it. In your wildest fantasy, you are in hell and you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
CAST AND STORYLINE
If you've watched NBC at all in the past few years, you've probably caught at least one episode of the Office. Based in the real-life hustling and bustling (haha) Scranton, PA, the series revolves around typical days in the lives of employees at the Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company. The mechanic of the show is that a camera crew has decided to film the ins-and-outs of the office, and as such, the camera and its crew are often acknowledged by the cast. The plot largely stays the same over the seasons, with minor plot twists which lend some transition to major changes on the show (such as Steve Carell's departure at the end of the 7th season). Much of the storyline remains consistent between episodes: employees attempt to do business while being distracted largely by their dunce of a boss, Michael Scott (Steve Carell). Other eccentric coworkers include Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), a delusional, farm-raised, socially inept fright of a salesman; Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer), a shy but otherwise socially acceptable receptionist/saleswoman; Jim Halpert (John Krasinski), a prankster and all around LOVABLE (seriously, I have a major crush) salesman, as well as rival to Dwight; Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey), an extremely rude, stiff, prickly woman, and so forth. Jim constantly pesters Dwight, to which Dwight makes laughably feeble attempts at counterattack. Pam and Jim have a slow, climbing  relationship, eventually culminating in their marriage and parenthood in later seasons. Michael moves through numerous relationships, Angela frets about any behavior to speak of from the other employees, Meredith (Kate Flannery) frequently makes horrifying realizations about her sexuality aloud to her coworkers, Kevin Malone (Brian Baumgartner) makes a serious case for the theory that he could be mentally handicapped, etc.

If you were driving a Trans Am, you would be the smartest idiot in the whole world.
A SLOW, CREEPING AND LAMENTABLE DEMISE
Initially, the show was met with skepticism by critics. The first season hailed comments of its inferiority to its BBC predecessor. After the second season, critics began to see the differences between the two shows, and recognize the American version as not a remake, but an interpretation of the original.

The Office also had more luck with viewers than did Arrested Development. On its premiere night, the series caught 11.2 million viewers. However, after its time slot was moved to Tuesday nights, its viewer numbers were halved. After the second season began, the show gained popularity due to simultaneous release of Carell's hit "the 40-Year Old Virgin," and was moved back to Thursday night on NBC. For many seasons, the series maintained roughly 8 million viewers, though it is worthwhile to note that after season four's high of nearly 10 million viewers, viewership dropped down to the high 7 millions by the fifth and sixth season. The show's popularity is dominated by those within viewers between the ages of 18 and 49, and it has been steadily climbing to its current #53 for the 2010-2011 television season.

Overall, the show has done extremely well over the years, and has earned its popularity. However, personally, I feel that the spark which prevailed from the first season to (arguably) the fifth has been lost over time. The jokes have the same ridiculous charm, but they don't tickle us as they used to. Something's gone missing.

Ultimatums are key. Basically nobody does anything for me unless I threaten to kill myself.
AWARDS
The Office has been recognized for its quality since the very beginning. In 2006, individual actors as well as the show won a total of 6 awards, including a Golden Globe (Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series-Musical or Comedy...Steve Carell) and an Emmy (Outstanding Comedy Series). In 2007, the show won an amazing total of 12 various awards, including a Screen Actors Guild (Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series), and many prestigious awards for filming and editing from a number of sources. In 2008, the show won a Golden Globe for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

You know what they say about a car wreck, where it's so awful you can't look away? The Dundees are like a car wreck that you want to look away from but you have to stare at it because your boss is making you.
MOMENTS

  • Angela's cat...and the Freezer
  • Michael CANNOT drive the Baler
  • Poor Toby.
  • Whoever...or Whomever??
  • That's what she said.
  • You CAN buy Gaydar online!
  • Meredith.
  • Myth: Three Americans every year die from rabies. Fact: Four Americans every year die from rabies.
  • Call of Duty!
There really are too many seasons for me to sum up my favorite moments in a few bullets. Seriously, there are so many of them.

The office, I will always love you. You made me love to watch television! You were the only show I consistently watched in High School. I own four of your seasons now, and hope to own them all. I respect you so much, but it might be time for you to go. It's time to let go.

Such class.

SUMMER DREAMS, RIPPED AT THE SEAMS

Summer's coming to a swift close. I dislike it. I think I'm finally realizing how close I am to starting school again...seriously, I MOVE BACK TO BG IN TWO WEEKS. Talk about a freak out moment.

Andy, over fourth of July weekend, at his lake house
I've been having a wonderful summer at home. I've been able to work more than in any summer previous, I've spent a lot of time with my family, and I've had many great times with my friends and boyfriend. Overall, I would say this was a great summer, albeit a bittersweet one: this is the last summer I'm going to have "free" from education or a "real" job. If I play my cards right, that is. I can't say that I'll want to have a "free" summer after this whole grad school thing is over; I bet you anything, I will want to be able to actually do what I will have studied for 6 years. And get paid for it (though not much to begin with, or so I've been told. Ah well, one must pay her dues at some point).

Becky and me at the Harry Potter Part 7 (Part 2) Premiere
I still have a few more weeks to have fun, though, which I plan to savor. I'm spending some time with my amazing friend Becky, who is moving to NJ to be a first grade teacher come fall! I'm so proud of all of her hard work, but it's going to be sad to see her go. I mean, she and I have never experienced higher education near one another (for undergrad she attended Liberty University, and I Bowling Green State University of Ohio), but for her to have a real job and real time commitments and real work will make it much harder for us to see one another, I have a feeling. Thank goodness for technology. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have a Facebook, a cell phone and a laptop computer. Seriously. Talk about technologically spoiled, right? And I'm not even the worst.

Becky and some of my other friends seem to have been conspiring (or rather, obviously have been conspiring) to find out when me and my boyfriend are going to be married. They prod and poke and tweak at any opportunity. It doesn't matter who I'm talking with, someone has to bring it up! And they have a point, I realize. My boyfriend Andy and I have been dating for nearly four years now, so it makes sense that they wonder. And 'tis the season for weddings--

(WARNING: TIRADE APPROACHING)

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!!! I swear, I have seen wedding pictures on Facebook from about 10 friends of mine in the past two months alone. SERIOUSLY!!?!?!?!?!?

This is what I look like when something boggles me.
Don't get me wrong, I completely understand how you can completely love someone else and want to do that whole "forever" thing with them. But we are so young! We have no real jobs! We don't make consistent money! Many of us are still in school, which means we have even less money than most other kids our age! Now, I come from a background where my parents were married when my mother was 30, so I have been educated about the benefits of waiting to get married. I realize others are educated differently, and come from different backgrounds, and that marriages between such couples have been successful time and time again (my boyfriend's parents, my godparents, and so forth). It has come to my attention recently that I do not feel the need to get married anytime soon, which is the basis for my feelings.

Can you see why I'm so crazy? These people.
Okay, I've cooled off, sorry about that!

Anyway, my friends are obnoxious and no matter how irritating it may be, I love them and know they mean well.

This summer has been one of reconciliations as well. For a while I had a falling out with one of my close friends, and it was pretty upsetting. Recently we've been speaking again, and this friend even apologized for the events which transpired between us. For the longest time I'd been telling myself "you have to be selective with friends...pruning the ones that are detrimental to your well-being and happiness isn't wrong"...but honestly, I feel much better about everything since we reconciled. Personally, I hate feeling that someone has ill feelings toward me. It's worth trying to make things better, in the end.

Someone walked through Jo-Ann's today with a young boy. I wasn't in the same aisle as they were, but I could hear the battle music from POKEMON playing on his Gameboy. I giggled. Loudly.

I officially turned in my two weeks notice at Jo-Ann's the other day. Sad day, but this is the best decision overall, since I'll be living in BG for the next two years, summers included. And I'm certain I'm not going to want to work there when I'm home for my scant breaks. Though it signals my time to go back to school, inside I can't help but count down until the my last day there. It's natural, I suppose...a door closing and another opening.

Well, it's my bedtime soon (seriously, when you have to wake up and be in to work by 6 AM, you end up messing up your life and going to bed at ridiculous hours). Maybe I'll post one of my running drafts tomorrow!  I am determined to make this blog lively again.

Tata, folks.

SUMMER HAPPENINGS

Hello again, long time no post! My bad.

It's been a pretty awesome summer thus far. I believe I've already spoken about my work schedule...I'm working a lot more than I have in summers past (which is GREAT), but I'm not working hours that I'm used to. I open at least three days a week, and it's really making me sleepy! I hate having to go to bed by 9, but it's what I have to do in order to feel remotely rested.

Me and my catch on day one!
My family went on a vacation to Pymatuning recently, during which I caught sooo many fish! I also learned to clean and filet them, which was slightly disturbing (one kept flipping about, though it was certainly dead, and another's eye fell out unpredictably) but very informative! I even grew enough courage to bait my own hooks (I just can't stab little minnows without thinking "I'm so sorry!!!!!!") by the end!

Lately I've been hooping a lot (as you know), and I'm in the mood to do some more! I'm going to buy some more tube (100 PSI, 1/2" inner diameter polyethylene) so I can make hoops of a different size, which should prove to be better for learning tricks. The hoops and tube I have right now are great for exercise, because it's so heavy, but it gets pretty hard to learn tricks with hoops that feel like they could crush my larynx. Not good! Haha. Anyway, I've found some tube at Lowe's for dirt cheap, so I'm going to start this new adventure probably next week.

Speaking of next week, MY LITTLE SISTER'S COMING HOME FROM HER INTERNSHIP TO SPEND THE WEEK WITH US! YAY! She's only been gone (working for Honda!) for two weeks now, but I miss her. She's super fun! She and my family are going to finally see my boyfriend's parent's lakehouse soon, too, which should be tons of fun! I'm really excited for the near future.

I've been knitting a lot lately! I finally learned the lesson that you can't start a project in the same season you intend to finish. I usually try to abide by the philosophy that "too much is always better than not enough," but it seems I'd forgotten that in this regard. But nevermore! Here is some yarn that I'm currently working with!

I just got some new knitting needles (See above) for my sister, mom and myself. It's times like these that I love working at Jo-Ann's: I put price changes on item at the start of the day, so I know what's on clearance first! I got these really nice 10" redwood needles for $2.97 per pair! Lovely.

Another exciting thing...I HAVE A PLACE TO LIVE IN BG NEXT YEAR! On the 17th of June my mother and I found an apartment (efficiency/studio) that I am in love with, and I'm super excited to live there! I've been collecting things lately for when I go to live there, including the following...

The most beautiful measuring spoons EVER!
I'll add more pics as I take them, but I LOVE some of the things I've found. I just got myself a legitimate set of silverware, and I grabbed a coffee pot from my neighbor's yard the other day! It holds 12 cups and works great, but takes 10 minutes to warm up. Oh well! I'm still on the market for some dishes, but that might be solved in the near future, thanks to some serendipitous events in my family. I can't wait to report more about my apartment as I learn and accumulate more!

Okay, that's a good enough update for now, I'll talk to you more later!

HOOPING POST #2

I've been neglecting the blog this summer, sadly.

I've been suuuuper busy working the opening shift, from 6 AM to 2:30 PM at Jo-Ann Fabric stores. It's really, really, REALLY tiring having to do this for many days in a row, and it's really depressing having to go to bed as early as I do in order to maintain good amounts of sleep (which, for me, is around 8+ hours).  When I'm not working, I'm hanging out at home or with boyfriend down near OSU. It's a busy life, but I'm enjoying my last few months of freedom!

Well anyway, I've been having a lot of fun recently hooping with friends! This weekend is Comfest weekend in Columbus, and I'm hoping to show off my new skills and learn new tricks when I'm there!

My Newest Awesome Hobby...Hooping! Hoop Post #1

I've called this my Hoop Post #1 because, frankly, I anticipate there being many more in the near future!

Also...THE WORLD HASN'T ENDED. YESSSSSSS. I was so scared!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not.

So, I've not been posting very much lately, mostly due to how busy I've been since GRADUATING COLLEGE!!!! Yeah, I am a graduate now. It's really weird. Basically I don't feel any different...but I know I should.

Summer has been super busy recently! Since I graduated, I've been moving back to my parent's house, getting back into the swing of my job, typing old notes from my major classes (because I want a review, it's more organized this way, and I can be rid of all of the old notebooks they're in), and HULA HOOPING!

Let me just say that hula hooping is incredibly fun and exciting and everyone should do it. You wouldn't believe how therapeutic it is to just go outside and put on some music and start hooping. The other day I hooped through the Wild Beasts' album, Two Dancers, and I was soooo tired and sore afterward. I have bruises on my hip bones now, they were really dark a few days ago. It was strange, but I was kind of proud of it!

I've made my own hula hoops. It's been an adventure...let's just say that the parent's weren't too enthused on the night that I came home from Lowe's with 100 feet of polyethylene irrigation tubing. It was 160 PSI, and 3/4 inch inner diameter, so about 1 1/3 inches outer diameter or so. From what I understand, it's a pretty heavy and thick type of tubing, but I'm okay with that, because I've never been good with hula hoops and wanted something ideal for beginners. I made my first hoop, Ole Faithful, on May 12th. It's around 40 inches in diameter. Here she is!

Since then, I've added some silver accent to my Ole Faithful. Here's how she looks now!

Action shot!

And then the other day I made Shelley, which is made of the same polyethylene tube as Ole Faithful. She's a bit smaller, around 36-37 inches in diameter. Here she is!

Action shot!
It's only been a week since I started hooping, but I feel like I'm making a lot of progress on my big hoop. I can do the vortex, I can do some chest hooping with my arms in, chest hooping normally for a few seconds, and today I successfully completed a trick where I transfer the hoop between my arms behind my back. It's hard to describe.

Just Youtube search "hoop dance" and you will find tons of videos of the things I'm teaching myself to do! I recommend giving it a look. It's really fun and very challenging!

A History of Sorts

I was recently inspired by a friend's blog to create a post on the topic of injury. While I've never broken a bone (every day I thank God for this...it would be so painful), I've had my share of bumps and bruises (physically and psychologically). Let's see if I can remember them!

  1. I don't really remember this first injury, or the age at which I acquired it. What I do remember is that I was injured while sledding with my mom. Mom and I were going down a hill into a section of trees (which we had been sledding into for at least half an hour without any negative outcomes), and it turned out that we were heading straight for a tree. Mom stuck out her leg to try to absorb the blow, but all I remember is waking up in my bed a little while later. Good times...I think this was the only time I've ever unintentionally been unconscious.
  2. When I got the chicken pox, I ended up scratching a few of them out, so now I have a tiny crater in my forehead, and another on my cheek.
  3. When I was in second grade, mom would drive me to my new elementary school, because I wasn't quite familiar with buses yet. One day we performed the routine as usual, but as I got out of the car, I somehow shut my thumb in the car door. I cried for hours, it hurt for days, and this incident has permanently affected my fingerprints. Talk about a moment that shaped a life forever!
  4. Later in elementary school, I liked to ride my bike around my neighborhood with my little sister, Monica, and my neighbor, Kelly. One eventful day, while we were playing bike tag, my front tire came into contact with my little sister's back tire. She fell off of her bike into the grass, and I fell the opposite direction, sliding across the pavement for about 6 feet. I couldn't walk home, so some nice lady gave me a ride back to my house. My bike was permanently scratched up on the right side, and my leg was sore and scabbed for days.
  5. Sometime when I was young, my little sister and I ran upstairs at the same time, and I fell into the banister. It left a scar on my right side.
  6. During middle school, I did some intramural basketball in my free time. During one game, I twisted my ankle, and could barely walk for the rest of the game. After hobbling across the court multiple times, I got to sit down. Walking sucked for a few days, but I got better after that.
  7. As a freshman in high school, a witch turned me into a newt. I got better.
  8. After freshman year ended, I did summer practices for guard with the other girls and our coaches. We were learning how to handle rifles, which was really fun and kind of intimidating at first. On the first day of spinning, I jammed my thumb...I'm so lucky :)
  9. One time during senior year of high school, I went out ice skating with my friends at the local Chiller. I got cocky, and tried to do the Superstar move as I was skating to the exit. I did...but my right leg had a little mishap. My knee popped right out of its socket...luckily it popped right back in, but it was impossible to walk. Thankfully I had friends to help me walk to the car. Working that night was awful. Since that incident, my right knee has been much weaker than my left.
  10. The summer after my senior year, I went on a trip to Europe with a group from my high school. When we visited Salzburg, I had a little fall in the castle, and scraped up my knee pretty badly. We didn't have any bandages, but we did have pads, so a friend let me borrow the prewrap in her hair and I tied the pad to my knee. We couldn't stop laughing :)
  11. During my mom's birthday weekend in 2010, I was in Columbus to surprise her. Before I went down to see her, I was spending some time with my boyfriend and our mutual friend, Stephanie. We were walking down to Noodles & Co. when I noticed that a caution sign was in th sidewalk ahead of us, marking construction in the road. I consciously remember telling myself to lift my first foot to step over it, but apparently I didn't do the same for my second foot, because the metal leg sliced my big toe open on the spot. Thank goodness we were right in front of a CVS, because my foot was bleeding profusely, and I was hyperventilating...I'd never bled that much before.
  12. During the summer before my senior year of college, I took a little visit with my boyfriend and a group of our mutual friends to his parents' lake house. Due to severe intoxication, we decided to swim across the lake and run through the forest, barefoot. Of course, I got poison ivy, but this was no normal poison ivy. My left calf was absolutely covered in it, was swollen and incredibly sore, leaked yellowish fluid for over a week, and even now, months and months later, there's a scar from where I had so many sores.
That's all I can think of for now...but it's a pretty fun list, I think :)

Ideas Needed!

So I'd love to keep blogging more consistently, so if anyone has any questions they want me to answer or if anybody would like my opinion on something, please feel free to comment on this post! I need motivation :)

Let the Countdown Begin!

Today I realized that I have two more weeks of school before finals week and my looming graduation.  I can't believe a year's gone by so fast...it seems like just yesterday that the year began! I remember freaking out about being NSSLHA treasurer and all of my new responsibilities, stressing about doing all of my grad school applications, and dying to be done with everything. Now that all of those landmark struggles have passed, I finally feel at ease.

That could just be the senioritis kicking in, though.

I feel like it's necessary to break up large areas of text with images. Meet my puppy!

I'm excited to graduate, in a way. I feel as though I am much less nervous as I would be, had I not been accepted to grad school and thrust into the real world. Thank goodness for higher-higher education...but at the same time, I still feel strange about graduating. It seems like I should feel different, like you hear about when someone turns 21 or 30 and has some kind of revelation, but I don't foresee that happening. I've never really felt different when major times in my life begin or end, like I'd grown and become something better. I just feel like me.

Now that I know where I will be going for grad school (BGSU, for those of you who haven't read my previous posts), I feel like I have direction again. Before I had heard back from schools, I came to the realization that my future was an open book, out of my control, and that scared me quite a bit. While to a certain extent everyone's life is out of their control, I've always relied on mine having a sense of direction. After high school, I went to college. There was no real discussion there, it was assumed that I would attend, and I was happy to go. I didn't want to start being an independent adult just as much as I don't now. Unlike many people who take comfort in pop songs that tell "the rest is still unwritten," I find a future without direction terrifying. I'm very glad that this whole thing has been resolved, and that I have made my final decision about attending BG. Again, it puts me at ease.

And this is my cat, when she's not being the devil and ripping people's faces off in unabashed and plainly exhibited hatred for everything that looks like me.

Still, graduation is swiftly approaching. I don't know whether I should be excited to walk down that aisle again and receive my diploma, it just seems like a normal thing to me. Honestly, I'm not very excited for the ceremony. Having my immediate family and boyfriend sit around in uncomfortable seats for who knows how long (hopefully not very long, I would feel horrible otherwise) just to watch me accept a piece of paper just isn't something I really want them to go through. At this point, I have trouble thinking of a diploma as anything more than a little trophy to be placed on a mantle somewhere, in my opinion, and the graduation ceremony more like a tribute to those who feel like they deserve recognition for their hard work (though honestly, you don't have to work too hard to graduate college). On the other hand, I feel that it's acceptable to want to be recognized for your accomplishments. In the past I have had difficulty letting go when others let my hard work go unacknowledged, so I understand why people want to feel rewarded. It just gets to be a little much when thousands of people expect recognition at the same time.

And this is my dog again. The best dog in the world.

This summer is something that I'm dreading, a little bit. I'm excited for it to be summer again for the same reasons I am every year: being with the family, boyfriend, and close friends I haven't seen in ages, swimming, sleeping in, just generally being relaxed for an extended period of time. The thing that I'm dreading is finding a new job, or one to supplement the seasonal one I currently have. My current job isn't going very well: I work in a retail store (whose identity I choose to omit) which hasn't been doing very well since the economical downturn. The business can't afford to pay all of the people it employs, and so hours have been abysmally low. Last summer I barely worked at all, and it was incredibly frustrating. Since then, I've had the feeling that I'd need a new one by this coming summer, and that thought was only reinforced by a few experiences I had over spring break this year. This weekend (hopefully) is the time at which I'm going to start applying to several businesses near my home north of Columbus. I just hope that someone wants me...when my little sister tried to find a job last summer, it went horribly. At the last minute she did find work at a grocery store and made good money, but it was ages before any of the businesses responded to her, and many gave her horrible offers for work. I'd love to not have two jobs, but if that's the best I can do this summer, then that just might be what needs to happen. My goal is to have weekends off...we'll see how that pans out. I need to keep things in perspective...I need to find another job before I can negotiate scheduling!

Let's say that this has really been eating at me lately, with summer so close. I even dreamed last night that my sister got a second job and I couldn't find any. It's just not fun.

Kitty again. Cute, but hateful and sad sometimes.

Until then, I have a few things to look forward to here in BG. This weekend, a good friend in the major and I are going out to lunch, and then we are going shopping for clothes for graduation. Our final NSSLHA event, our spring banquet, is coming up as well. I'm excited to hear our speaker and just hang out with the girls in a different setting. Then, later that same night, girls in our major are having a bar crawl down Main! Last year it was really fun, and I'm very excited this time around, too :)

Okay, I think that's enough for one night. Time to lay down on my not-so-comfy couch and nibble on Tagalongs.

This is an article posted by readers of an online magazine, Cracked, which mostly publishes silly articles. It's still fun to read though :)
